Making a Right Choice : Studying in the UK

Postgraduate students do not apply through UCAS but instead they apply directly to the institution of their choice.

Applications can be made to more than one university, to increase the chances of being accepted. Some universities allow students to nominate a second course 'in reserve'. There is no restriction on the number of different courses students can apply for in any one year, but student advisers recommend that students draw up a shortlist of 6 to 8 universities.

Some courses fill up their places very quickly, so students must prepare well in advance of the starting date. This might be as early as the October or November of the previous year; ideally it shouldn’t be any later than April, although some courses accept students as late as August.

Areas for prospective postgraduate students to investigate:

  • course content, including core modules

  • institution reputation and department ranking

  • external course validation, e.g. accreditation by a professional body

  • the timetable, especially if they need to fit in part-time work

  • entry requirements

  • fees and funding

  • employment prospects

  • student satisfaction ratings

  • professors, research supervisors, tutors and their professional practice

A postgraduate qualification is awarded after the successful completion of either a programme of taught courses or a period of research, or sometimes a mixture of both.
